Honda announces plans for FCX hydrogen fuel cell car
January 10th, 2006 by Hydrogen Power
Honda just anounced it plans to produce the FCX, introduced at the auto shows just a few months ago. Although production is 3 or 4 years off, they seem confident that recent advances in fuel cell technology has made the FCX a viable vehicle. A new absorption material to assist in hydrogen storage is said to allow a 350 mile cruising range.
The FCX is one of the nicest looking hydrogen vehicles the auto manufacturers have shown and the low floor fuel cell platform makes excellent use of space enabling a large passenger cabin.
Honda is also developing the HES or Home Energy Station which produces hydrogen from natural gas for fuel cell vehicles along with heat and electricity for the house. The HES may make cars such as the FCX somewhat more practical due to the complete lack of a hydrogen infrastructure at the present time. No price for the FCX was mentioned.

Who Picked Hydrogen Cars as the winner?
January 4th, 2006 by Hydrogen PowerTo hear the most fervent hydrogen advocates speak, you would think hydrogen is the answer to practically every energy problem known to man. Maybe it is, but maybe it’s a dream. With government incentives for research, as we’ve already noted, everyone is joining the hydrogen race chasing hydrogen dollars but if you step back for a moment and look at hydrogen, you might start to question if the incentives in this area are the best place to put those dollars.
An article yesterday had this interesting paragraph about fuel cells: Read the rest of this entry »

December 21st, 2005 by Hydrogen PowerHydrogen Engine Center, Inc. acquired an existing 30,000 square foot building in Algona, Iowa as part of the expansion of its manufacturing facilities. hydrogen Engine Center manufactures the Oxx Power(TM) engine — a 4.9L hydrogen-ready, internal combustion engine that runs, with minor adjustments on gasoline, hydrogen, propane, biodiesel, or ethanol interchangeably.
Oxx Power(TM) has the same form factor as the gasoline engine that is currently powering over 100,000 ground support tugs in airports throughout the United States and Europe, along with other industrial applications including power generation. The company believes that Oxx Power(TM) is the world’s only engine for both replacement and new OEM applications that can run on a variety of alternative fuels. HEC is delivering on the promise of alternative fueled engines today.
Hydrogen from hazardous waste
December 19th, 2005 by Hydrogen PowerForeverGreen Enterprises Inc., a company headquartered in New Jersey, will be setting up a plant in Indiana that disposes of hazardous waste such as old paint and inks and produces hydrogen in the process. The company will charge a fee for the disposal and sell the hydrogen. The plant could solve two problems at once, environmental waste disposal and hydrogen production. The company is not well known and this will be their first plant, though if it actually works, it will most likely be the first of many.
Multiple waste steams, in multiple physical states (solid, gelatinous, liquid, and gaseous) can be processed simultaneously. No other system can boast of the same level of flexibility. Feedstocks for our PMDâ„¢ platforms cover the complete range of wastes and hazardous materials including Acids, Aerosols, Alcohols, Asbestos, Bases, Benzene, Chemicals, Coolants, Drugs, E-Waste, Farm Wastes, Fertilizers, Freon, Greases, Household Hazardous Wastes, Hydrolysates, Infectious Waste, Inks, Lacquers, Lubricants, Medical Waste, Oils and Oily Rags, Paints, PCB’s Pesticides, Petrochemicals Pharmaceuticals, Plastics, Poisons, Rubberized Materials, Sharps, Shop Sorbents, Sludges, Solvents, Tires, Universal Wastes, Varnish, VOCs, Waxes, and just about any other non-radioactive material comprising the 279 million tons of regulated wastes produced annually in the US.
Can this actually work? If it does, they are definitely on to something. We’ll follow this company for updates and report back.

Everyone is chasing hydrogen dollars
December 14th, 2005 by Hydrogen PowerWith all of the hype surrounding hydrogen, hydrogen cars and fuel cells and government investment in hydrogen technology, is it any wonder everyone is whipping together a new hydrogen device of some sort in his garage? Inventors who know a little about how hydrogen is produced are tinkering with new ideas. Companies with expertise in other areas are jumping into hydrogen because dollars are waiting. Everyone has the breakthrough that will change the world, … or not. Wired has an interesting article:
“Eighty percent or more of the ideas that come directly to us violate the laws of physics,” says Patrick Serfass, a spokesman for the National Hydrogen Association.
“When you put that kind of money out there, anybody who has even the most marginal technology related to hydrogen comes out of the woodwork,” says Joseph Romm, an assistant energy secretary during the Clinton administration and author of the book The Hype About Hydrogen.
