Smartfish, a company based in Berne Switzerland, has been building a concept aircraft with a shape much like a fish. Designed to have excellent flight characteristics and high fuel economy, it looks like nothing else. Now, they are creating the HyFish, a version of the Smartfish that will be powered by a hydrogen fuel cell.
The objective of the project is to demonstrate the effectiveness of fuel cells in a challenging environment. At the same time the construction of the experimental vehicle will help to gain further knowledge in the areas of lightweight construction and packaging of fuel cell systems.
The aircraft will be constructed based on the concept by Swiss company SmartFish GmbH, because the aircraft design combines volume and usable weight as well as excellent performance.
The concept looks nice, the fuel cell power sounds nice, ... but I think we need to wait and see what actually gets built before anyone gets too excited.
