The nuclear hydrogen economy
11 April 2005 by Hydrogen PowerSince Stewart Brand’s positive comments about nuclear energy began making the rounds, I began looking for other discussions in this area. I found many with a surprising degree of acceptance of nuclear power coming from the environmental camp. This is not what I expected. Nuclear energy has long been off the table as far as potential energy is concerned, because the enormous resistance from opposing factions made it financially unfeasible. Now, as energy realities begin to set in, environmental groups are seeing the clean power option of nuclear energy almost for the first time. This is promising.
Hydrogen in sufficient quantities to convert to a hydrogen economy will not come about through windmills and biomass. Massive amounts of electricity are required and can be produced with nuclear power plants, cleanly, without burning fossil fuels.
There is considerable comment and discussion of nuclear power and its relation to hydrogen over at NEI Nuclear Notes.
