Rolls Royce announced it will invest $75 million to develop a hydrogen fuel cell replacement for gas and diesel generators.
They plan to build a portable power source that generates one megawatt of electricity - enough for 200 households. They plan to sell it to small businesses, office buildings and power generation companies as alternative or back-up power supplies "some time before the end of 2008".
The number of companies investing in hydrogen fuel cell technology continues to increase. Their target dates for commercially viable products may prove to be optimistic but with a steady growth in research and development we will find out more clearly what obstacles remain.
