Hydrogen dreams

26 March 2005 by Hydrogen Power

Are advocates of the “hydrogen economy” telling the whole story? As someone who has spent the last twenty five years in complex, high tech field engineering (CT scanners, MRI, ultrasound and nuclear medicine) and computer network and systems administration, I have learned to look very carefully for reasons and causes instead of appearances. Objective examination of the current state and future potential of hydrogen power for either vehicles or homes gives a very different picture than the one portrayed by writers convinced hydrogen is the answer to energy independence and environmental concerns. There is an easy dismissal of the obstacles and costs and too many statements that assume the problems are already solved.

Going forward, we will examine some of the standard claims made for hydrogen and try to shed some light on issues not often raised. In doing so, we hope to offer a clearer view of the real potential of the hydrogen economy.
