Formula Zero fuel cell racing is just getting started and already there is excitement as university teams from around the world compete in the first stages of a race series dedicated to zero emission racing. The karts use a combination of fuel cell and super capacitors to power them around the course, with hydrogen stored in a 5 liter bottle.
Eventually, Formula Zero, based in the Netherlands, plans to scale up the cars to full size, going in stages from the current student level to a city street level course and finally a full on race course.

Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide, Inc. has delivered five hydrogen-fueled Toyota Prius hybrid vehicles to the City of Santa Ana, California. These hydrogen fueled internal combustion engine hybrids are designed to stimulate demand for hydrogen, speed the development of a hydrogen infrastructure and function as a bridge vehicle technology to hydrogen fuel cells.
The complete hydrogen internal combustion engine fuel system, including both the injection system and hydrogen storage system, was developed by Quantum at its Advanced Vehicle Concept Center in Lake Forest, CA. Included in the fuel systems are the company's patented fuel injectors, fuel rails, electronic control system and software, hydrogen storage, and an optimized turbocharger. In addition to performing in specified starting conditions and meeting certain drivability specifications, the vehicles have been designed and tested to achieve SULEV (Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle) emissions standards.

Iceland has an enormous natural resource in their hot springs and flowing rivers which enable it to heat homes and businesses and provide electricity with hydroelectric power. Iceland is now committing to using that electricity to create hydrogen which, by the middle of the century, will be required for powering all of their vehicles. Their cheap electricity provides the perfect opportunity for generating hydrogen at low cost. As long as fuel cell development proceeds and makes hydrogen powered cars cost effective, Iceland could be well on its way to becoming a hydrogen economy.
Thanks for the tip, Jester!
